Swiss+Tech sent a prototype of the 7-in-1 to its factory in China to evaluate the device’s manufacturability.
“The factory made some suggestions and the PDD team liked them,” recalls Rubin. “Then, the PDD team changed those suggestions just slightly and the factory liked their changes even better than before.”
“When we do business with foreign factories, we don’t just throw the design over a wall and forget about it,” says Aaron Marshall, Senior Product Development Engineer. “We look at the factory’s proposed change to evaluate if there’s any chance it could compromise the design or quality of the end product. If it doesn’t, that’s fine. But if it does, then we suggest alternatives.”
Swiss+Tech’s manufacturing partner created this industrial mold for its BodyGard Platinum from the MAGNET PDD prototype.
In August 2007, Swiss+Tech debuted its BodyGard Platinum in its upscale retail channels to great success. Rubin says the product quickly sold out on the Home Shopping Network. In the November 12, 2007 edition of BusinessWeek, the product won praise from the EVP of Sharper Image, Drew Reich, who said the tiny product’s popularity was this Christmas season’s biggest surprise.
Rubin says Swiss+Tech would recommend the MAGNET PDD team to any small- or medium-sized company that prefers to outsource their design and engineering needs.
“The MAGNET Product Design and Development is part of our team here,” says Rubin. “They are one of the region’s best-kept secrets. They work well with our factories and bring us fresh ideas.”
